Thousand’s filled the streets in downtown Hollywood to celebrate St. Patrick’s day early on Sunday 3/13/11.
Streets were closed off and the color of the day was definitely green. Plenty of beer and music for all, but the day was definitely a family affair.
Hollywood Blvd. and Harrison Street were closed off and people were literally dancing in the streets. No matter if you were Irish or not, the mood and the music made you Irish for the day (at least if you were wearing green)
I headed to downtown with my two children around noon (about an hour before the parade). We easily parked in one of the municipal garages without any wait whatsoever. $10.00 event parking for the whole day. We walked about a half a block and were greeted with Irish music and a festive crowd. A quick stroll down the Boulevard and past small booths selling trinkets, beer and food and we came to Anniversary Park. This was definitely the kids zone with games, arts & crafts activities. We played for a short while and then decorated some free t-shirts with paint. Before we knew it we could hear the parade coming down the street.
Fortunately we had a few minutes to get a nice cool iced lemonade, but the weather was so perfect we barely needed it. The parade went through with the usual flair consisting of marching bands, floats and cheerleaders, all prompting applause and cheers from the crowd. Lots of beads and candy being thrown and handed out.
We headed out after a few hours but the festivities went on into the night with live music and even a U2 tribute band. As the night drew on, the crowd appropriately changed from family to young adult and it was a great time for all.
Looking forward to next year.
