On Saturday March 5, 2011, more than 1180 volunteers came by land and in 60 boats to 24 sites on Saturday to participate in the 34th annual Waterway Cleanup sponsored in part by The Marine Industries Association of South Florida
More than 18.6 tons of trash were removed by the volunteers from Broward County’s waterways, rivers and canals.
MIASF public relations and events coordinator Melanie Daily said in a statement, “We are very proud of the strong effort put forth by Waterway Cleanup volunteers across Broward County today. Despite some scattered showers, we still had a great turnout and a successful cleanup, which is a testament to the dedication of our hardworking volunteers.”
Some of the unusual items found at this year’s event included a submerged parking meter and a shopping cart from the long gone department store Jefferson Ward.
Oustanding honors were given to the Group and Individual that performed throughout the year. The Individual Year-Round Environmental Stewardship Award went to Hollywood’s own Carl Ignacuinos (also known as “Hollywood Carl”” for his financial donations and volunteer service to the park, as well as his stewardship of a 10- mile block of beaches and boardwalk in Hollywood Beach. The Group Year-Round Environmental Stewardship Award was presented to the Oakland Park Kiwanis Club.
